Brain Injury Fundamentals was developed by leading healthcare and rehabilitation professionals to serve as a go-to resource for individuals who provide care for people living with brain injury. This may include non-licensed direct care staff, rehabilitation and hospital facility staff, social workers, family members and friends, and first responders.

This training and certificate program uses real-life scenarios and an interactive workbook to cover key brain injury topics, such as:

  • Behavior management
  • Interacting and building rapport with people living with brain injury
  • Medical complications
  • Medication management
  • Self-care and coping strategies for families and loved ones

After completing the training, candidates will receive a certificate that is valid for three years.

How to Take the Training

The training may be provided by an approved Brain Injury Fundamentals instructor, a state Brain Injury Association, or a service provider. BIAA also offers virtual training courses on a semi-regular basis. To learn about our upcoming trainings, view our calendar of events or sign up to receive email updates.

Participants who successfully complete the training will receive the Brain Injury Fundamentals certificate. The training is approximately eight hours in length. However, the length of the training may vary slightly by instructor.

Costs and Fees

  • Brain Injury Fundamentals application (including Practical Training Workbook): $135, including shipping
  • Training fees vary by instructor.

Note that Fundamentals Application fees are non-refundable. 

Become a Brain Injury Fundamentals Instructor

To become a Brain Injury Fundamentals Instructor, you must be a current:

  • Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer, or
  • Certified Brain Injury Specialist who has held CBIS certification for three or more years
