Vestibular Rehabilitation in Brain Injury: Assessment and Management of Vestibular System Dysfunction

Many people experience vestibular system dysfunction following brain injury. This session will provide a basic understanding of the vestibular system, the resulting difficulties upon identifying dysfunction within the system, and the potential avenues for treatment and rehabilitation. Topics include the fundamental anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, the pathophysiology and etiology of common dysfunctions, and diagnostic criteria and measures used to determine dysfunction. Attendees will learn the plans of care required for the management of disorders with an emphasis on the role of physical therapy.

Brain Injury from Blast Exposure in Military Populations

Military service members may be exposed to both low-level repetitive blasts from weapons training and combat as well as high-level blasts from IEDs and other large explosives. While some blast exposures result in a traumatic brain injury specifically, head injuries secondary to low-level repetitive blast exposures may not be as obvious, but can be associated with poorer long-term outcomes including increased psychological symptoms, cognitive concerns, sleep changes, and reduced overall quality of life. In this clinical webinar, Molly Sullan, Ph.D., will summarize current research on blast-related brain injuries for military Service Members and clinical implications of research findings to date.
