A Champion for the Brain Injury Community

When Maxey Scherr first started practicing law, she knew she wanted to specialize in brain injury cases. Having witnessed the profound effects of brain injury on individuals and their families, she was driven to dedicate her practice to helping those whose lives have been forever changed by it.

In establishing Scherr Law Firm, which specializes in traumatic brain injuries, Maxey says she got to create the life she wanted – blending her experience and career as a lawyer with her passion for the brain injury community.

Last year, Maxey took that dedication a step further as a Luminary of the Year Legal Fundraising Champion for the Brain Injury Association of America’s (BIAA) Luminary of the Year event in Washington, D.C.

“Funding has been drastically cut, and this is such an underserved population already,” Maxey said of her decision to be a Fundraising Champion. “It seemed like the most appropriate use of my free time I could possibly find.” While Maxey has been a supporter of BIAA in the past, she felt it was especially important in 2025 to support organizations that provide help, hope, and healing to the brain injury community.

As a member of the TBI Litigation Group, Maxey has seen firsthand the impact that BIAA has when it comes to supporting the brain injury community. “BIAA comes and helps to educate us and provides resources for our clients, and I got to see firsthand the incredible work that they do. I’ve even introduced my family to BIAA,” Maxey shares, adding that her niece – a brain injury survivor – has joined BIAA on Capitol Hill to advocate for brain injury legislation.

Maxey’s fundraising efforts included social media challenges, as well as outreach to family, friends, colleagues, and other associations, but the event she was most excited about was Night Before the Fright – a Halloween party fundraiser featuring music, a costume contest, a silent auction, and more. In total, Maxey’s efforts raised nearly $32,000 for BIAA.

The Luminary of the Year celebration honors leadership, dedication, and impact across the brain injury community, recognizing not only the honoree but also the fundraising champions like Maxey, whose efforts drive meaningful change. This gala-style event features a cocktail hour, dinner, auction, a fund-the-mission moment, and powerful presentations from the honoree and the many individuals connected to their work—including colleagues, friends, patients, survivors, caregivers, and supporters who are making a difference.
