I tried my first TBI case to a plaintiff’s verdict in 2006, which involved a so-called “mild” traumatic brain injury that permanently changed the life of a divorced mom of two teenage sons. Since then, I’ve handled a number of traumatic brain injury cases of varying severity. One involved a teenage boy who was in a coma for several weeks following a truck accident and lost all his social skills. I used a number of people who knew him either before or after the accident to prove his loss of social skills, and the case settled for a seven-figure number. My most recent TBI trial was in July 2024. My client was injured at a construction site and sustained subarachnoid hemorrhages and a concussion with permanent residual symptoms. After a week of trial, the case settled for $1,125,000. The case included experts in neurology, neuropsychology, and neuroradiology. I have continued to represent TBI survivors since then, and I’m currently handling cases involving traumatic brain injuries.

Apart from having to remain current on the medicine and the science (which I find fascinating), I am always aware when representing TBI survivors that the results of their case may make the difference in whether they have the resources to build the new life many of them will require and I have learned from experience that representing TBI survivors can also require extra sensitivity and patience when their injury leads to personality changes and emotional issues. A TBI survivor’s family is also affected by their injuries, and I always try to get to know them as well.
