Aretha Watson, PhD
Aretha Watson, Ph.D., is not just a brain injury survivor but a living testament to resilience. After suffering two brain aneurysms, she learned to walk again, talk, and retrain her left arm, which had become immobilized. Her journey from a rehab patient to a peer mentor, speaker, advocate, and support group leader is a beacon of hope for many.
Aretha’s unwavering dedication to higher education is evident in her over 20 years of service in enrollment management. Starting her career in admissions, she steadily climbed the ladder to leadership roles at multiple four-year universities and one community college. Her higher education career pursuits were detoured in 2022 after her unexpected brain aneurysms.
As part of her recovery, Aretha has participated in LoveYourBrain yoga. This practice taught her how to calm her mind and be present. She is now a certified LoveYourBrain yoga instructor. She has also written part of her personal story for Brain Injury Hope Magazine (BIHN) to hopefully inspire others struggling with their recovery.
Aretha’s passion for helping others is evident in her interactions with patients and families in the community transitioning home after their health crises as a peer support mentor at Riverview Medical Center. Her willingness to openly share her experiences with small groups or organizations reflects her deep desire to connect with others who are navigating life after a brain injury.
Aretha is open to speaking in various settings to help patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals navigate the recovery process after a brain injury or traumatic health crisis. These settings include virtual and in-person lunch-and-learn staff trainings, conferences, and non-profit events.
