Kel Mabatah

My name is Kel Mabatah, and my story is one of resilience, faith, and transformation.

On December 3, 2014, while managing my family’s business in Nigeria, I survived a brutal, near-fatal attack that left me with a severe traumatic brain injury, four major brain surgeries, paralysis on my right side, and the loss of my ability to speak. I was also stabbed, suffered a fractured skull, and lost several teeth. After an emergency brain surgery in Nigeria to save my life, I spent a week in a coma. When I woke up, I could not speak, move the right side of my body, or understand the full extent of what had happened to me.

Once stable enough to travel, my father flew to Nigeria and brought me back to Houston, where I underwent three additional brain surgeries before beginning intensive rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in January 2015. There, I began the long journey of relearning how to walk, talk, use my right arm again, and regain my independence. Due to the severity of my injury, I remained a patient within the TIRR system for nearly a decade.

Through years of rehabilitation, unwavering faith, relentless perseverance, and a mindset centered on my personal motto—“No Excuses, Only Adjustments”—I rebuilt my life physically, mentally, and emotionally. I refused to allow my circumstances to define me. Instead, I chose to be defined by my mindset and actions.

Doctors told me I would never walk, talk, or live independently again. Today, I am living proof that obstacles do not have to determine outcomes.

In 2019, encouraged by my therapy team at TIRR, I began training for bodybuilding competitions. Despite remaining partially paralyzed on my right side, I entered my first competition towards the end of 2020. Rather than competing solely in the adaptive category, I chose to compete against able-bodied athletes as well. To everyone’s surprise, I placed second. Motivated by that experience, I trained even harder and, in 2021, earned my professional bodybuilding status by winning first place in a bodybuilding competition, competing against healthy, able-bodied competitors. Since then, I have competed in 12 bodybuilding shows and placed in most of them, proving that limitations do not have to prevent achievement.

That same year, I regained another important piece of my independence when I earned my driver’s license again and returned to driving after seven years of not being able to drive.

My recovery journey also inspired me to create the ‘Kel Strong’ Mabatah Foundation in 2020. The Foundation’s mission is to create a better future for individuals impacted by traumatic brain injuries by providing financial support for treatment and rehabilitation services on their journey to recovery. In partnership with TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital, the number 2-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the country, we established the ‘Kel Strong’ Rehab Scholarship Program, which provides direct support to individuals facing financial hardships, inadequate insurance coverage, or no insurance at all. To date, the Foundation has raised more than $350,000 to help individuals access critical therapies, equipment, and services needed on their path to recovery.

Today, I am also an inspirational speaker who works with organizations nationwide, including Amazon, Morgan Stanley, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and the USTA (United States Tennis Association). Through my story, I help individuals and teams develop resilience, leadership, perspective, and purpose in the face of adversity.

In December 2024, I returned to playing my first love sport, competitive tennis, for the first time since my injury, competing in a tournament for athletes with physical disabilities. Becoming both a professional bodybuilder and a competitive tennis player after a traumatic brain injury is something I once believed would be impossible. God is good!

Most recently, I launched ‘Kel Strong’ Apparel, a purpose-driven clothing brand built around the message that changed my life: “No Excuses, Only Adjustments.” The brand represents resilience, adaptability, and purpose, encouraging others to pursue their goals regardless of the obstacles they face. A portion of the proceeds supports the ‘Kel Strong’ Mabatah Foundation and our ‘Kel Strong’ Rehab Scholarship Program.

If I had to summarize my journey in one word, it would be consistency. Recovery did not happen overnight. It was built through daily effort, discipline, faith, and a commitment to keep moving forward, even on the hardest days.

My message is simple: You can accomplish far more than you think, regardless of your circumstances. It may look different than you originally imagined, but with faith, perseverance, and the willingness to adapt, anything is possible.

No Excuses. Only Adjustments!

All glory and praise to God!
