Veterans with Brain Injury and Disability Benefits: What to Know

On Veterans Day, the Brain Injury Association of America honors and thanks the veterans who bravely served our country and the military service members who serve today.

Social Security benefits protect veterans when injuries, including brain injuries, prevent them from returning to active duty or performing other work. Both the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Social Security provide disability benefits to veterans. If you are a veteran, you may qualify for disability benefits through one or both programs. This fact sheet, “Social Security Disability and Veterans Affairs Disability — How Do They Compare?” offers a side-by-side look at Social Security disability and disability offered through the VA. Depending on the situation, some members of your family, including your dependent children or spouse, may be eligible to receive Social Security benefits.

If an individual has a 100 percent VA compensation rating, the Social Security Administration will expedite their disability claim. We encourage you to share this information with the military families you know.
