The Brain Injury Association of America Remembers, Honors Fashion Icon Kate Spade
June 6, 2018
American fashion icon Kate Spade witnessed the devastation of brain injury in 1986 when her close friend, Amy Thompson, suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) after being shot twice in the head. Spade, who tragically passed away June 5, set a personal goal to remember her friend by supporting the brain injury community, hosting six annual fundraisers for the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City (BIAKS).
Speaking to the Kansas City Star, BIAKS Executive Director Robin Abramowitz called Kate “warm and personable” and graciously acknowledged her longtime support and dedication. “We were honored and humbled,” Abramowitz said, “but she was the one who felt honored to be able to do this for her friend.”
Spade ultimately raised more than $300,000 for BIAKS.
“The devastation caused by brain injury impacts more than the individual and his or her family, but parents, children, coworkers, and – in this case – friends.” offered Susan Connors, BIAA’s president and chief executive officer. “On behalf of BIAA, we are truly grateful for Kate’s generosity and dedication to the brain injury community in Kansas and throughout the country.”
