BIAA Continues Outreach Efforts for Brain Injury Awareness Month
Fairfax, Va. – The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) will continue its #MoreThanMyBrainInjury campaign in 2022 as part of Brain Injury Awareness Month. The nationwide media campaign centers the stories of brain injury survivors to increase understanding, reduce stigma, improve care, and showcase the diversity in this community.
As part of #MoreThanMyBrainInjury, survivors, caretakers, professionals, family members, and advocates are invited to participate on a personal level through storytelling, social media posts, custom apparel, media outreach, and legislative advocacy.
“We saw tremendous cross-channel engagement in the inaugural year of the campaign and hope to maintain that momentum,” said Susan H. Connors, BIAA’s president and chief executive officer. “Our goal, with this campaign and as part of our work generally, is to support community members in expressing their unique experiences. #MoreThanMyBrainInjury is about advancing the narrative that individuals with brain injuries are just that – individuals.”
BIAA has made an array of collateral available that illustrates various mechanisms of brain injury, from concussion to overdose to abuse. One in sixty Americans live with brain injury-related disabilities. Acquired brain injuries (ABIs) are a serious public health issue, with 3.6 million new injuries reported each year and likely many more that go undiagnosed, unreported, and untreated.
“Brain injury is a complex and often misunderstood condition,” said Shana De Caro, Chairwoman of BIAA’s Board of Directors. “No two brain injuries are the same. That is one of the reasons why it is essential for us to empower survivors to speak out about their individual experiences.”
BIAA works year-round to educate the public about brain injury and support survivors and their families. For more than three decades, BIAA has proudly led the nation in observing Brain Injury Awareness Month every March.
