Troy Morgan is a client at Goodwill NeuroRehab in Lewiston, Maine, and he recently became a published author. Troy’s lifelong journey to recovering from brain injury began at birth, and he experienced an aneurysm rupture at age 6. This incident left him blind for 3 months, and after recovering his sight, he was left with islands of vision. He had to learn how to walk and talk again. Being at such a young age, he recovered quickly from his injuries with the help of speech therapy and physical therapy. The repercussions of this injury made it difficult for Troy to learn new material, and he had to learn strategies to succeed in school. He graduated high school with high honors and was a star on his track and cross-country teams.
Troy’s experience with brain injury continued later in life through multiple strokes and a concussion. His recently published memoir, “Running from Lightning,” tells the story of his most recent injury and his progress with speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy. He continues with his journey today. Although he continues to make small gains, he never gets discouraged or gives up.
Troy has been a writer his entire life and writing a book has always been a goal of his. For years Troy knew he wanted to publish a book but wasn’t sure what to write about. His passion for writing gave him the idea of writing this book and exceeds any goal that he dreamt of ever having. Although it took multiple brain injuries to do so, Troy has made a negative experience into a positive accomplishment.
Through his recently published memoir about his journey to recovery following a ski accident in 2011, Troy is sharing his journey with others. The accident in 2011 caused a concussion which led to his third stroke. Troy’s book tells the story of his recovery and informs the reader about brain injuries and brings awareness to how dangerous they can be.
As events happened during his journey towards recovery, he jotted them down so as not to forget. Most of his thoughts would come in the middle of the night when he would wake up with nothing on his mind other than writing. He would then sit by his computer and type in parts of his story as the ideas came to him. Troy worked on this book over a period of three years as events took place. Although he has had his ups and downs during this journey, he has kept a positive attitude every step of the way.
Now that he has accomplished this goal of publishing a book, he would like to share his story to let others know that after brain injury, it’s not the end of the world. There is adaptive equipment out there that can help you get back to the things you once enjoyed, even though it’s not the same as it used to be.
Along his brain injury journey, Troy’s positive attitude and hard work has led him to recover beyond predictions from doctors, and he continues to set goals and accomplish them today.
