Alexandra de Roos
Alexandra (Alex) de Roos is 2-time nonprofit founder, dancer, and choreographer. She is a student at the University of South Florida’s Judy Genshaft Honors college and after she graduates, plans to attend medical school to become a neuropsychiatrist.
At the age of 14, Alex moved away from home to New York City to study at the School of American Ballet (SAB), one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the world and the feeder school for the New York City Ballet. Alex trained at SAB for five years learning from renowned faculty and performing in various in studio showings and workshops. Unfortunately, Alex’s dance career ended after sustaining an incredibly severe concussion.
Alex’s experience with her concussion and as a dancer led to the formulation of her nonprofit, The Blue Project Inc., which combines neuroscience and the arts by spreading awareness about traumatic brain injuries and how the arts aid in healing them. Alex also has a podcast entitled The Blue Project Podcast which seeks to enlighten the listeners on the psychological mindset to overcoming adversity, defining one’s dreams, and the work necessary to accomplish those dreams. Conversations on this podcast focus on resilience, opening the conversation surrounding mental health, and shares the stories of both brain injury survivors and those actively in pursuit of their goals.
As a nonprofit founder, traumatic brain injury survivor, and an active participant in the Miss Florida Organization, Alex frequently gives presentations to students about overcoming obstacles and perseverance so that they can continue to be inspired even when life throws unexpected obstacles their way.
