Shawn Lyons
I suffered a brain injury (stroke) in September 2017 while attending a business conference out of state. I spent over a month at an inpatient rehabilitation facility (Legacy Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon) prior to returning to my home in Pierre, SD where I continued rehabilitation therapies for over a year (occupational, physical and speech). I had to relearn all basic functions including speech and walking. Other than my speech, which continues to improve, I’ve had a full recovery.
Prior to my stroke my 30-year professional career included association management, public affairs, economic development, as well as communications (ironically). Following my stroke and rehabilitation I formed Lyons Den LLC providing research and other services to clients in my home state and across the nation. Currently I serve as a program specialist for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks assisting on public policy, research, disability compliance, and other duties as assigned.
In October 2025 I was awarded with the South Dakota Governor’s “Outstanding Employee with a Disability” (starting at 10:00 mark).
I also serve on as the incoming chair on the Governor’s Board of Vocational Rehabilitation. I’ve been featured in various public awareness campaigns including the American Heart Association-South Dakota and the SD Department of Human Services-Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
I do a daily motivational message on various social media platforms as well as a monthly video on the same. I believe these serve multiple purposes including speech and cognitive reasoning. I like to believe my story is one of determination and resilience. I hope my story can benefit others.
