At age 58 I experienced a hemorrhagic stroke. I had been working a lot during the pandemic as a Food Service Director in an Assisted Living. These environments were high stress and with less than desirable staffing, led me to experience a massive brain bleed, requiring emergency brain surgery to save my life. Not able to work as a chef as I had for over 30 years, I became disabled, and unable to work.

Living a life through the lens of being newly disabled, I began to see access as an obstacle to some of my favorite places, even many doctors’ offices were not accessible. I identified my new purpose to be an advocate for access.

Through my advocacy work, I learned about the Town of Barnstable Disability Commission. I interviewed and was appointed to the Disability Commission. As a Commission, they hear concerns brought forth from residents and visitors regarding accessibility concerns in the Town of Barnstable. If you see something that is not accessible report it to your local town.

I believes in the good of all people, remember, if you see something say something.

BE THE REASON SMILES TODAY!

Every brain injury is different, yet there are lessons we can learn from the experiences of others. No matter whether you are an individual with a brain injury, a family member, caregiver, or clinician, your story is important.
