Don’s Road Home

February 14, 2018 Angela Clark White

My husband, Don, was in a near fatal accident on October 27, 2017. It is not really known what exactly happened, but we believe Don passed out due to his diabetes. He was ejected from the top of his jeep as it flipped after hitting an embankment and left him laying on the roadway. They did not expect Don to survive the ambulance ride to the hospital; however, he did. Don was heavily sedated for 11 days and on a ventilator; however, he somehow was able to pull out that ventilator himself. He was recovering well until his kidneys decided to shut down and then was put back on a ventilator and heavily sedated for 5 more days. 2 plus months in the hospital icu and acute long term care, he was released to a skilled nursing facility for 60 days. My husband is progressing well and hopefully will be released from scheduled dialysis treatments, as we receive confirmation that his kidney function is back fully, but in 2 1/2 weeks, I will be faced with bringing him home with severe disabilities and no clue how to get him the necessary rehabilitation he will need to help him to continue on his path of recovery. I am going to be in a scramble to find doctors and venues that are in my insurance network to get Don the continued care he needs. I am working out this journey and I do see light at the end of this tunnel. I give thanks to God for letting us keep Don here on earth and I am so happy that his personality has remained as sweet and kind as it was before the accident. Forward we go into figuring out what is next for him and our future.
