Brain injury happens to a family not just one person
My son, at the age of 15 in 1989, was in a one car accident. His best friend was driving them home from school in my MG without my knowledge or consent. My son was the only one hurt. He had a fractured skull which resulted in a blood clot the size of an egg. They airlifted him to UAB in B’Ham, Al. He was in a coma for 21 days then moved to rehab. We were there for 3 months. He had to learn everything just like a newborn. He is paralyzed on his right hand and arm and walks only with a foot and leg brace. The drs. gave us no hope he would even live and then if he did he would live in a nursing home forever. God was very good as he came home and I worked with him everyday for 2 yrs. trying to get him as much life back as possible. After a few yrs. he was able to marry and has 2 daughters. His wife died 2 yrs. ago and he is now alone and unable to care for all his needs. After his wife’s death he became very depressed and gave up trying. He lost his job of 22 yrs. and custody of youngest daughter. His seizures keep getting more frequent and his needs keep growing. His dad died in 2011which left only myself, (mother) and 1 sister to care for him. The rest of our small family has passed away and I really miss my support system as it becomes harder to adjust to all his needs. My son lost his wife, dad, 2 grandmothers and 2 grandfathers all within just a few years of each other. I truly believe the stress of this very serious TBI contributed in some way to their deaths. Brain injury effects the entire family not just the patient.
