Diane Hernandez is the Director of Support for Careers at Children & Families of Iowa, where she leads a dedicated team of individuals committed to making a positive impact.
What made you choose a career in brain injury?
My first career was in travel and tourism public relations. I transitioned to my current career path when I pursued a Master of Science in Counseling with a Specialization in Rehabilitation Counseling at Drake University. (Coincidentally, I attended commencement on the same day my eldest child graduated from high school.) To gain experience in the field while in that program, I went to work for Community NeuroRehab, an organization pioneering innovative residential, community-based neurobehavioral rehabilitation services in Iowa. It was there that I obtained my CBIS certification.
Throughout my career, I’ve navigated between vocational and brain injury rehabilitation. In my current position, I can integrate these realms by overseeing our supported employment program, which focuses on assisting individuals who have experienced brain injuries. The team at Support for Careers shares a deep passion for helping people discover purpose and fulfillment through meaningful employment, both financially and personally.
Why are you passionate about brain injury?
My fascination with matters of the mind has fueled my professional pursuits, but it took on a deeper meaning when it became personal. My mother’s experience with hydrocephalus, followed by a traumatic brain injury from a fall, profoundly impacted me. From her, I learned the importance of caring for others. By imparting knowledge and skills to professionals working with individuals and families affected by brain injury, I aim to honor her legacy of compassion and service.
Why is having a CBIST important to you? How is it helpful in your daily work?
My role involves drawing on my CBIST expertise, staying informed about best practices through resources like the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, and networking with peers in the field. These efforts form the foundation for ensuring our work with clients is of the highest quality possible. It’s also an opportunity for me to give back, as I received invaluable mentorship and guidance from CBISTs early in my career. I’m forever grateful to them and eager to support others in their professional development.
