Life Before & After My Brain Injury
When my life was quickly falling out of my hands and reality wasn’t within reach, I felt helpless. I needed to find a way out somehow, someone or something to influence me in a better way by helping me out of the major hole I had dug myself into. When we started that school off, we were diligent students getting good grades. Then, suddenly, a tragedy happened. I, myself had gotten a brain injury. Luckily, I survived although I was in the hospital for about 8 months. When I have arrived back at school, I noticed that I had no way whatsoever in getting back on track with my grades. It was impossible. Yes, I passed the course but I didn’t get the credits I needed. The next year after, I’ve figured that they have flunked me a grade level. I’ve learned that I had no choice but to just do it all over. During my elementary / middle school years, I’ve always thought of the sport “basketball”. I have always watched games on my tv at home but I always wondered how it would be in real life, like on the court. My first year of high school, I was welcomed to basketball try-outs. We were taught how to play the game then got tested on what we have learned. The week after, they have named the people who have made it on the team. Surprisingly, I made it on the team. I was excited and shocked that I really did it. As I reflect on the many years I have put into this game I lost it. I can’t help but still wonder how it happened so fast. I got a brain injury and forgot how to basically do everything. I came back to normal although, I am not exactly how I used to be. But, I have learned so much about life, relationships, and hardships through this experience. With the help of basketball, I can be a good leader, can work through adversity, and am a competitor through any obstacles I am forced to face.
