SUMMARY:Redefining Recovery: Addressing TBI as a Chronic Condition
DESCRIPTION:Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is not a single event. Instead\, its effects may unfold over months\, years\, or even a lifetime. In this webinar\, co-hosted by the Brain Injury Association of America and the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine\, Dr. Kristen Dams-O’Connor will present the latest science\, discuss evidence-based strategies to improve the care of people living with chronic TBI symptoms\, and address information and service gaps. Whether you are a healthcare professional\, policymaker\, advocate\, caregiver\, or person living with brain injury\, this webinar will deepen your understanding of TBI across the lifespan and highlight actionable steps to improve outcomes and quality of life for millions of Americans affected by brain injury. \n\n\n\nClick here for professional registration\nClick here for survivor/caregiver registration\n\n\n$50\, includes 1 ACBIS CE credits and 0.1 AOTA CEUs.\nFree\, no CEUs included.\n\n\n\n  \nSpeaker\nKristen Dams-O’Connor\, Ph.D.\, is the Director of the Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai\, an internationally recognized program for traumatic brain injury research and care. She is the Jack Nash Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Rehabilitation and Human Performance\, and Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). She completed a BA in Neuroscience at Colgate University\, a PhD at the University at Albany\, and predoctoral training at the Rusk Institute at NYU. She completed postdoctoral fellowship in clinical neuropsychology and brain injury research and joined the faculty at ISMMS as an Assistant Professor in 2011.

SUMMARY:Emotional Dysregulation: DBT for Brain Injury Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Emotional dysregulation is a common challenge following brain injury\, resulting from both neurobiological changes and disrupted coping strategies. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)\, originally developed for borderline personality disorder\, offers a structured and skill-based framework to enhance emotional regulation\, distress tolerance\, mindfulness\, and interpersonal effectiveness—key domains that are frequently impaired post-injury. This presentation introduces the core principles of DBT\, explains how to adapt them for cognitive and emotional challenges associated with acquired brain injury\, and provides practical applications for rehabilitation and therapy teams to improve patient participation\, mood stability\, and self-awareness.

SUMMARY:Progress in Concussion/TBI Science and Clinical Care over the Last 40 Years
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge and clinical practice have evolved over the 40 years since the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation’s topical issue (volume 1\, issue 2) on “Minor Head Injury.” This webinar will review important insights from this 1986 issue and highlight how research since has refined our understanding of concussion/traumatic brain injury pathophysiology\, recovery\, and possible long-term effects. We will highlight shifts in terminology and outline how assessment and rehabilitation approaches have developed over time. Finally\, we will highlight areas of ongoing uncertainty and innovations that could help resolve them.
